The basic tracks for TRAVEL's fourth album of 2008, "Anti-Social Butterfly," were recorded in the same day-long improv session as the tracks for "Spoken Wor[l]d" and "= Writes." I had taken all the best material from the day and segregated them into three moods-- ambient stuff, pop stuff, rock stuff. Ambient was on "Spoken World," hooky on"'= Writes." This is the rock stuff. I tried some alternate mixing techniques on this one to give the album its own distinct sound from the others. I made most elements very dry whiile doing a lot of multi-track layers. For the vocals, which were, as always, laid in after completing initial instrumental mixes, I used a lot of big effects and delays for contrasts. If you like the more ragtag songs on past albums, the more area rock material, this is probably a far superior album to "= Writes." Personally, I think it's a tie. Both records are strong, but for different reasons. I'm very pleased that these turned out so well and they're good albums to end the band. We have one more E.P., a best-of, and a box set coming in 2009, but "= Writes" is our last full-length album we intend to do. The band has run its 10 year, 10 album course. I'm excited to work with these guys again another day; we just won't be using the TRAVEL brand. |
