Some music you make just to experiment. 'a sleep + a wake' is actually the result of 4 different techniques. Plainly guided by my own ambient agenda, the band's normal sound has been slowed and stripped, turned instrumental & sleepy. The guys were willing game and I thank them for their trust.

Since there are only a few songs, I'll comment on each on directly…

"The Printing Press"
I've been really getting into 'assembled' songs - small fragments built in a computer to become something brand new. "The Printing Press" is the one I liked the best. It contains some bass boom and a guitar lick strummed during an amp check. I'm working on a whole album of songs made this way (coming next year?)

"Meet Doctor Von Shock"
This was actually recorded for "Me & My Friend Noise." The band was recorded on a mono microphone, then cut n' pasted & lovingly played with. It's similar construction to the tunes on the last album, but this one seemed to fit better among this set.

"Flashlight Propaganda"
In late 2001, I had this dream where TRAVEL recorded custom instruments that allowed us to lie down while recording. The music in the dream was the most beautiful hum. There was even a title for the album in the dream: 'a sleep + a wake.' When I woke up, I sent the band an email, and they were enthusiastic to try it. "Flashlight Propaganda" is the only song that made it onto this album using that process but there will probably be more released in the future. It was actually quite relaxing. We couldn't even see each other, just looked at the ceiling.

"Museum of Modern"
Yes, this song is 24 minutes long. Yes, this song is all improv. Yes, you might hate it. Yes, I think it's the best thing we've ever done. By the time Matt's dropping spare change on his guitar, scattering coins in left & right stereo, you'll either think it's amazing or it's shit. The process on this song was to have each band member in a different room of Eric's 3-story house. At one point, you hear me stop playing, walk down the stairs, and walk back up. You can hear water running in the kitchen, amps being plugged in, doors opening & closing… all the while the song goes on. At one point, I looked out the window and saw Eric in the front yard adjusting a flag, returning five minutes later to pick up where he left off. Now, having said all that, I don't think this song would be nearly as cool, except that about 20 minutes in, it actually becomes A SONG! A really hooky song. It's so fucked up I can't believe it. The music goes along, and is really interesting, but if it didn't build to what it does, it wouldn't have had the same impact. Because it ends with a climax and the literal snapping off of a lamp, I think it's a gas.
